TERMIS Operation Demo

TERMIS Operation will give you a better overview and improved operation. By using live SCADA data the TERMIS model is transformed from a planning tool to a decision making tool, integrated in your day-to-day operations – with instant and clearly identified benefits and economic advantages. Like GPS automobile navigation, TERMIS Operation will advise you of problems in the network, no matter which turn you take.

How does it Work?

The operator does not require any in-depth knowledge of TERMIS. By scrolling back and forth on a simple button interface he can obtain the information he need such as pressure, flow and temperature for any given point in time - in the past or in the future.

The TERMIS model receives live data from the SCADA system as well as forecast information about weather conditions through the data interface, Data Manager. This enables the model to continuously predict future consumption even during periods of quickly changing or extreme weather conditions.

Based on these data TERMIS Operation runs a simulation for the entire network, allowing the operator to see exactly how his district heating distribution network is operating – right now – AND up to 3 days from now. The operator can choose to display a number of different variables, such as supply temperature, return temperature, pressure, flow etc, as he wishes. All the display functions in the TERMIS system is fully available when going real-time.

What are the Benefits of TERMIS Operation

TERMIS Operation gives the operator a number of immediate benefits in terms of better overview and improved operation of the network, both from a technical viewpoint as an economic.

Improved Network Overview

The real-time TERMIS (TERMIS Operation) allows the operator to gain full overview of all aspects of his plant. The knowledge normally only available in the head of the experienced operator is now available for everyone, enabling them to obtain full operational knowledge of the bottlenecks and potential of the network.

TERMIS Operation displays the data, such as temperature, with color coding all over the network, enabling the user to learn how the network is functioning at any given time.

The information can be made available to the call center enabling them to give accurate information about the energy supply anywhere in the network, shortcomings or temporary problems will be evident. The call center can click on any node in the network to see measurements such as the pressure at the specific location. Alarm setpoints for all parameters can be preconfigured.

The model has an accuracy of around 1%, which means that the model can, in most places, substitute the need for costly instrumentation – here alone the pay-back of TERMIS Operation is secured several times.

Prediction of Demand

TERMIS Operation is fully integrated with SCADA and can be prepared to send an alarm to the SCADA system if error conditions in the network are predicted. The TERMIS system will constantly predict the demand of your network, which is based on history and on the current and future weather situation.

By a click of the mouse the operator can simulate the closing of a valve. TERMIS will run prediction and return an alarm if one of the pre-configured set-points is exceeded. The operator will therefore quickly and easily be able to advise the staff in the field if it is safe to close a specific valve. Other related problems can be seen and avoided with intervention simulation.

Improved planning – Maintenance – Refurbishment – Contingency Plans

With TERMIS Operation you can run scenarios of the network – on the basis of here and now situations, and the future demand.

You make a copy of the real-time system, and take TERMIS off-line – right now. TERMIS knows the present state of your network – and TERMIS knows the future demand required in the network.

You are therefore able to run scenarios of future situations to optimize your plant or to see how to address future bottleneck.

A typical scenario is the maintenance work, requiring you to shut down parts of the piping. You can run scenarios to ensure yourself how the system will or can be operated in order to supply the heat – or you can advise the people that may be affected – in advance.

This off course also applies to planning of new parts of your city – the off-line scenario can be used to dimension the network – to play with different operational modes and to perform contingency plans, should you have a pipe rupture, plant failure etc.

What Went Wrong?

The call center is bombarded in the morning, with calls from angry consumers having no heat. This situation occurs – for various reasons.

Having TERMIS Operation allows you to perform a ‘replay’ of what happened last night – or in the period of malperformance. This gives you the opportunity to ensure the consumers that it will not happen again, to learn more about your plant, or to run scenarios of how to alleviate this problem by adding new equipment.

TERMIS offer a range of optimizing modules. They will all improve your operation and reduce your production cost as well as your CO2 emission.
